Summer/Fall/Spring Clerkship Program for Law School Students Law Center for Families (LCFF) continues its long tradition of meeting the legal service needs of low-income families and individuals in Alameda County. We provide individual representation, advice, referrals and community education concerning: housing rights, family law/domestic violence, consumer law, economic support/public benefits, and language access/rights. We also work toward accomplishing systemic change through impact litigation and administrative and legislative advocacy. LCFF fills in the often-overlooked gap. We are the only county-wide legal service provider that assists both indigent people and the working poor. Many of our clients are caught in the middle: ineligible for assistance from other programs, yet unable to afford a private attorney. We serve clients regardless of their immigration status and focus on serving communities that face multiple challenges such as those with limited-English proficiency. We serve both the urban and outlying areas of the county. LCFF coordinates with other legal service providers and community-based organizations to promote clients' access to legal and non-legal services. Our staff is diverse, bilingual and bicultural. We also work with the Legal Language Access Project to provide language accessible services in languages not spoken by our staff. Law clerks at LCFF have the opportunity to be involved in almost every aspect of our work. Clerks research and analyze substantive issues impacting our clients. They perform intake for our walk-in clinic, conducting a pre-analysis of each client’s needs. Clerks will prepare and file court documents. They also may gain exposure to administrative and, in some instances, legislative advocacy. As needed, clerks become engaged in LCFF’s community education and outreach efforts. Clerks should be able to commit to at least 12 hours per week for 10 weeks during the school year. LCFF is especially looking for students with a commitment to serving low-income and immigrant communities. To apply for the Summer/Fall/Spring CLERKSHIP PROGRAM, please send the following:
